The island has hosted a ‘Sprint’ Triathlon since 2006 drawing competitors from all over Ireland and overseas. The event, which forms part of Triathlon Ireland’s ‘National Series’ Race Calendar, takes place in mid May each year – though the date and time change each year in order to catch a suitable High Tide for the swim… the route is challenging and contains spectacular scenery, making it popular for seasoned athletes, first timers and everyone in between (Relay teams are welcome)!
In late 2009 the Valentia Island Triathlon Club was formed. The aim of the club is to train for and support our annual triathlon event and develop and support a calendar of athletic events on and around the island, for local residents and visitors alike. In addition to the triathlon we also host a swim around Beginish Island (6km – mid July), regular short swims in Knightstown harbour, regular cycles of varying distances, and short runs including a ‘longer’ half marathon (21.3km – early October).
Anyone can join our club by completing an application form – see Contact Us – you will be added to our mailing list and be informed about all our our events, training and social sessions!
