It was a smaller field than usual but the weather gods were smiling… most of the time. Congratulations to Damien Foley, Aidan McCarthy and Gearoid MacGearailt, and Caitriona Barry, Mary O’Shea and Valentia’s own Miriam Lyne who placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd for the lads and lassies respectively. Thank you to all competitors for making the last event of our race calendar really special – and to our volunteers for making sure no one got lost, and encouraging words of support!

Thanks to everyone who assisted with support and those who participated in this years Beginish Island Swim. It was a sunny day with a light breeze… start time was set for 16:00. But as the swimmers were about to depart for the island at 15:00 strong gusts developing from the north west gave rise to concerns for safety of swimmers and feasibility of the swim. A short discussion was followed by a decision to switch the swim route and we all headed over to Portmagee for the 8km swim up the channel and back into Knightstown Harbour (same route as 2011).

Conditions were excellent though the start was heavy going and some swimmers got caught for an hour or so by an adverse tide. Overall swim times were marginally slower than 2011. Ned Denison and Mark Waters were locked together from start to finish, coming in at 2 hours and 4 minutes. Vanessa Fenton put in a great effort and finished in 2 hours 18 minutes. Relay competition was pretty hot with a local team of four Curtin brothers being pipped to the post by a combo of Mikey Moriarty and veteran Robert Gallagher. Swimmers were joined by Iveragh Peninsula swimming legend Rob Bohane (second person to swim around Valentia Island in 2013 – narrowly beating Ned Denison’s record), and Finbarr Hedderman who recently became one of only 20 swimmers to have ever swum between Ireland and Scotland… visiting from Brighton Eileen Remedios came third place overall for the ladies… For full results see (pictures to follow);

Thanks to everyone who participated in this years Valentia Island Triathlon which took place on Saturday 24th May 2014. Despite dirty old weather and a change of swim route (approx 700m in Knightstown Harbour) competitors put in a strong performance to ensure another memorable weekend. Valentia Island Triathlon Club Presentation of Cheque to Valentia Island Community Hospital

It was with great pride members of the Valentia Island Triathlon Club were able to present a cheque to representatives of the board of the Valentia Island Community Hospital for €10,500 the proceeds from the 2103 Valentia Triathlon. The presentation took place in the Sceilig Rock Function Room in The Royal on Saturday Night.

The Triathlon is synomous with the hospital and over the last eight years has raised in excess of a € 100,000 for this vital community service. This is a huge achievement is these financially trying times.

Con O’Shea (V.I.T.C. Treasurer), Brian Foran(P.R.O. V.I.T.C.), John Falvey & Collette (Board Valentia Hospital),
Miriam Lyne (V.I.T.C.Secretary), Maria O’Connell (V.I.T.C. Race Director), Noel Curran (V.I.T.C. Vice chair),
Tim Poullain-Patterson (V.I.T.C.), Vincent M. Kidd (V.I.T.C. Chairman)

Our club ethos is very simple through our sporting activities we try to raise as much as we can in support of Valentia based community groups, whilst providing a platform for training and competing in the different codes our sport offers especially for our club members of all levels.

Over the years the events the club runs have benefited the hospital, tourist office, community centre, events committee (adventure race this year) and other organisations on the island. Each event brings people from all over the country and beyond to see and experience first hand the beauty and uniqueness that is Valentia.

So it is vital we keep these programmes of activities going. We welcome new members and anyone who is interested in getting involved we cannot do it on our own. It would be great to get new people into the club bringing with them new energy and ideas. They too can become an integral part of our small dedicated group and help us all to go forward together.
Valentia Island Triathlon Club is nothing without the dedication and hard work of the committee, club members, stewards / marshals, volunteers and the support of the greater community as a whole. It’s through their commitment and help in all weathers, the giving of their free time whenever called upon that enables the club to succeed in helping others. We thank them most sincerely and look forward to 2014 with anticipation for the events and challenges that lie ahead.

On behalf of all at Valentia Island Triathlon Club,
Vincent M. Kidd ( Chairman )

The Valentia Island Triathlon is now in its seventh year and is going from strength to strength every year. The Valentia Island Triathlon club which was formed in 2009 has built this event to such a high standard that the club were awarded the accolade of hosting not only the National Series but also the National Championship. Over 600 participants signed up to take on the challenging route. For us locals it was an honor to race alongside (or behind as the case may be) the countries top triathlete’s.

From 9am onwards the swimmers boarded the car ferry for Renard point. The swim was let off in three waves and promptly at 10am under starter’s orders we were on our way. The first swimmer to exit at the lifeboat shed was Brian Harris in 8 minutes 38 seconds covering 750 meters. The sea was like glass and the sun simmered on its surface making it ideal racing conditions. The 20 km bike route takes in the most scenic views of Dingle Bay, The Skellig’s, resting in the Atlantic and along the Portmagee Channel back into Knightstown. From the town clock the competitors then ran 2.5km through Glanleam woods along the Glanleam estate. And back again into Knightstown.
Brian Harris had a generous lead time exiting the water, but it was Kerry man and now National Champion Mark Nolan that showed the spectators why he is European champion when he romped home in a winning time of 57 minutes and 56 seconds, closely followed by Stephen Early in 58 minutes 46 seconds. Flying the flag for the ladies was Katie Cooke from West Cork tri in 1 hour 6 minutes and 17 seconds. The local relay team to pick up silverware were John Dowling, Junior Murphy and Sean O’Shea in 1 hour 4 minutes and 38 seconds picking up second place in the relay section.

Speaking with race director Maria O’Connell, “We couldn’t have asked for a better day, the weather certainly makes everything much easier and more pleasant to race in, a lot of preparation goes in to running a successful triathlon and it would not be possible with out the help and co-operation of everyone in the community”. It is true that the Islanders take pride in hosting the triathlon, every man, woman and child was in a high visibility jacket on Saturday, ensuring that all the participants could race safely.

The triathlon in Valentia was the brain wave of adopted local Tim Poullain-Patterson when he decided 6 years ago to partake in a triathlon to mark his 40th birthday, 90 participants took part in 2006 and each year it has grown and grown. Valentia Island Triathlon Club started its season with a duathlon on March 18th , then the triathlon and the next step is the swim around Skellig Micheal on June 30th for the first recorded group swim around the UNESCO world heritage site. The Season will then end with a half marathon around the Island on Saturday 15th of September. For more information see this website.
Congratulations to all involved for a thoroughly enjoyable race.

This is a fund raising event for Ballinskelligs Inshore Rescue – who will be providing refreshements onshore afterwards as well as essential boat cover to make the event happen!

Valentia Island Duathlon took place on Sunday 18th March in Chapeltown on Valentia Island. Valentia Island Triathlon club hosted their inaugural event in aid of The Paul Curran Trust fund in glorious sunshine. 75 individuals and 27 relay teams took to the starting line in what was a very competitive race. Cathal O’Donovan from Dunmanway in Co Cork crossed the finish line in first place in a fantastic time of 54.33 minutes. He cycled the 18.5KM circuit of the island in 29.25 mins in which must surely be a course record, he was followed closely home by another Cork man Mark Nolan who is no stranger to Valentia and has won The Valentia Island Triathlon before. Shane Scadding was in 3rd place and a special mention must go to Valentia Island man Brian Murphy who competed a brilliant race to finish in 4th place.

The Ladies race was won by Aoife Nash and she was followed home by two South Kerry ladies Geraldine Breen in 2nd place and Paula O’Shea in 3rd position. Team O’Sullivan/Houlihan won the relay race, with team Murphy in 2nd place comprising of two young athletes Ciaran Murphy and Cillian Donovan.

This Duathlon was an overwhelming success which was achieved by great racing, some top class athletes and great support from athletes from all over South Kerry and beyond. A special word of thanks also to the stewards who helped in no small way to the smooth running of this event.

*90 enrolled for the 4 mile Beginish Island Swim 2011*

Off the rugged west coast, many of Ireland’s finest distance swimmers will assemble on Saturday 16th July for the third annual Beginish Island Swim. In one lap around the Island the swimmers will experience all the possible conditions:

It starts at low water from a sand spit. The first 500 meters is through the weeds between two islands. Rounding the first corner takes swimmers along a sandy beach. Then the trick is to sight the gap in a reef between two islands. The effects of the North Atlantic can be felt as swimmers near halfway. Now fully exposed to the western swells the lighthouse provides visual comfort. Out of the worse of it and the swimmers pick a course near to, but just off, several reef heads. Finally there is a mile long straight sprint back to the starting location.

2011 entries were swelled by the eleven school swimmers from New Zealand and their coach Graham Beaumont. It is believed to be the largest non-American foreign group ever to complete in an Irish Open Water swim. As a group the ninety swimmers range in experience and ability from: four person relay teams comprised of local swimmers, swimmers accomplishing a personal best longest distance and experienced marathon swimmers.

Vincent Kidd the proprietor of The Royal Hotel in Knightstown Valentia Island, where the after swim festivities are held, said: “Commercially this swim is one of the top three annual events on the island. Last year I participated in a successful relay team and fear that I was so happy behind the bar that I forgot to charge for half the pints I pulled!”

In 2010, 21 year old Cornelia Lyne loved the swim: “It was great to be the first local to complete the 4 mile Beginish Island swim. There will be several more going for it this year as open water swimming is catching on here in the islands.”

Last year one of the experienced marathon swimmers was helping some swimmers set 2011 goals in The Royal Hotel after the swim: “Beginish is just like the 28.5 mile swim around Manhattan Island in New York – just fewer people and buildings – go for it next year.”

The entries for 2011 are now closed and another record entry. For more details or to be put on the 2011 invitation list please contact Tim Poullain-Patterson at or 0868220333.

The video on also provides an excellent view of the event.

The Valentia Island Scallop Festival 2011 kicks off with an evening of fun, Friday 17th June. Swimmers should turn up togged out in the harbour at 7pm, and there will be a drinks reception in the Royal afterwards. Three times all-Ireland winner Ger Lynch will be launching the festival proper which kicks off over the weekend 9th-10th July. Family focused events over the weekend will include a Junior Triathlon.

Congratulations to everyone who participated and helped to organise this years Arachas Valentia Island Triathlon on Saturday 21st May. The weather was stormy, but a revised swim route meant that we were able to drive on… The overall winner was Andrew Kavanagh part of the large Wicklow contingent who finished the race in 1:03:50. South Kerry man Aodh O’ Neill made an impressive sprint finish and in the end was piped by a mere second to finish just behind the winner in 1:03:51 to the delight of home supporters. Third place was Mark Horan in 1:04:24. The first women home were Jennifer Duffy from the Pirhana club in 1:10:22, second was a regular Valentia race competitor Katie Cook of the West Cork Club in 1:13:09 and third was another Wicklow athlete Siobhan Duggan in 1:15:55.

Kieran Jackson sporting the Irish colours was the first junior home in an impressive 1:14:09, and he waited to cheer on his father who also completed the event. In the team event the first relay to finish was Dublin based “badassarchitects” who were as impressive as their name! They completed the course in 1:04:07. But the locals were well represented in the team event to finish second and third – Junior Murphy’s team second in 1:12:54, followed by Seamus Lynch’s team in Third 1:16:35.

Thanks to Seanie Power and Frances Cronin who provided pictures of the event, and Paul Burke who made a nice video.
